DAVIS, Calif. - UC Davis guard Mark Payne has been selected to the CollegeInsider.com Freshman Mid-Major All-America Team, it was announced by the wesbite as part of its 2008 honor roll on Monday.
This is the second year-end honor for the Stockton, Calif. native. Earlier in the month, Payne was named as the Big West Conference Freshman of the Year.
Payne started all 31 games for the Aggies, leading the team in minutes played (33.4 per game), field-goal shooting (.524), rebounding (5.2 per game), assists (99) and steals (57). He also averaged 9.3 points per game and shot at a .808 success rate from the free-throw line. On March 1, Payne became just the third player in program history to record a triple-double, posting career highs of 19 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists in UC Davis’ 83-77 win over Sacramento State.
Payne led all Big West Conference players at 1.84 steals per game, while ranking among the league leaders in assists, rebounds, minutes, assist-turnover ratio and three-throw percentage. He is the only Big West player to be named to the Freshman Mid-Major All-America squad.
